*It is getting about time to slip in an asterisk and start weaving a tale again, according to some who have been complaining, this is past due. For those who have been complaining the last month or so….I’ve told a few, " Yeah, I’ve got the next tale ready to go, rolling around in my head, just not typed yet…..Trouble is, I’ve forgot where the asterisk button is on the danged keyboard!"…… I will dedicate this to a gentleman who introduced himself to me at Sam’s a few days ago, travels through every week or two, commuting between both Dallas and Houston, always picks up a Richland-Chambers Progress, catches up on a Texas History lesson….and the local Sheriff’s Report at the same time! Said he next carries them to his Mother, and she reads ‘em too. Say, I never dreamed that the Sheriff’s Report could ever be a calling card at Sam’s….Imagine that….Right up there with brisket and Coconut Pie. Please don’t nobody tell Pontene Daniel about this…..Just continue letting him think it’s just the pie and brisket!.....Okay, enough foolishness, here we go…… During this very same week, one hundred sixty eight years ago, in the year 1840, a large mass of Indians were moving southwesterly, traveling on their ponies. None are alive today who can give an exact number….Some say 700, others 900, still others over a thousand. This would be a huge assemblage of Indians for their home area, encompassing present day Panhandle Texas, western Oklahoma, eastern New Mexico and part of Colorado. Generally, their numbers were always far smaller, in order to maintain enough grass for their horse herds. But, even more odd, this group was bound for the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. These were not Tonkawas, nor Karankawas, nor Caddoes. No indeed, this was a fierce band of Comanches, Lords of the High Plains, with a vast pony herd, moving steadily and relentlessly toward the small settlements, interspersed along the Texas coast. White frontiersmen spotted them during their journey, and began warning their neighbors of the party, and planning ahead that there was a chance the Indians would return by approximately the same route. This news, due to the non-existence of communications, would only travel behind the Comanches as they passed. Those to their front had no inkling of the Indians approach. This would be a key factor for those hardy souls who inhabited the small settlement of Linnville in present day Calhoun County, midway between present day Houston and Corpus Christi. We’ll hear more about Linville and what transpired there, of the Indians, and also of the hardy souls who arose, took muzzle-loading arms, and defended their newly formed Republic of Texas. But, alas, we will go no further this week…..Until next week, then….tune back in. Same rules as before, no test, no finals, read it or not, the choice is yours…. I’ll furnish the tale, you’ll just need a little interest and imagination.

Until Next Week…..RALPH BILLINGS
